Weather in Hungary, Debrecen

Hungary is in the temperate zone, in the heart of Europe and has a continental climate. This means that the weather is quite easily predictable and there are big differences between the weather in the four seasons. Summers are hot and winters are cold.

Hungary is a flat area, placed in the Carpathian Basin, so Hungary is protected from the extremes of weather by the mountain ranges (Alps, Carpathians) encompassing it from almost all sides. The central and eastern areas of the Great Alföld have the most extreme seasonal differences with hot and dry summers and cold windy winters.

Hungary has a rather low rainfall but the number of sunny hours is quite high. According to statistics summers are warmer and drier than decades before. Many experts say it was caused by greenhouse effects.

Temperatures may rise above 30 C in July and August, but generally do not last long.  In winter heavy frost or snow is quite frequent. January and February are the coldest months, but the average temperature does not fall below minus 5 C. Smaller rivers and streams and Lake Balaton are often frozen over for long periods. The beginning of autumn is called an Indian summer (in Hungarian: Summer of old women) if the weather is still warm and dry.

Rainfalls are quite moderate throughout the year (average level is 600 mm per year). Rainy seasons are mainly the beginning of spring and autumn. Storms are common in this time of the year. All kinds of precipitation may occur during the autumn months from drizzles and rains through mist, fog, and sleet to snow.

I suggest you wear light clothes in the summer with a jacket for cool evenings. In winter you should put on a warm coat and boots. It is very useful if you have an umbrella or a raincoat in spring and autumn.
